- If appropriate, challenging and interesting activities are provided, children are more likely to be engaged and involved.
- If you have prepared an interesting program for the children then it is likely they won’t have a spare moment to behave badly. Discipline issues will not be a major issue.
- If there are difficulties because of a child’s disabilities or special needs, these will have to be managed well to ensure a great experience for this particular child as well as for other children.

If there are difficulties because of a child’s disabilities or special needs, these will have to be managed well to ensure that particular child’s involvement as well as a great program experience for other children.
- Prepare well
- Have a clear learning point that makes sense in the language of the child/learner.
- Understand the ages and stages of children and don’t expect too much of children in what you are asking of them in your program. If something is way too hard and you seem to be expecting them to do it, children will tend to feel no good and this could be damaging.
- Neither expect too little. Children will become bored.
- Offer alternatives or take the time to provided coaching/mentoring if you absolutely need something spot on.
- ADAPT, ADAPT, ADAPT!
Every program out of a book / curriculum will need adapting to suit you and your children. Get to know your children and what they are interested in and see how a program can be changed to suit them. - Use your environment to full advantage. If you are at a beach, write on the sand, not on paper!
- If a program element is not working, drop it immediately and move on to the next program element. Always prepare a backup idea or two. Have something up your sleeve or in your bag.
- Every program needs time for relationship. Sometimes we can be so busy with a curriculum, a schedule, an event or activity we can forget the child and his or her thoughts/feelings.
