- Check if the child is unwell or something is happening to contribute adversely to the situation. Address this.
- If you have spoken to a child about a particular issue and if you have already devised a plan in order to address and correct the behaviour, you must follow through in some acceptable form.
- If the child is presenting with a different unhelpful or unacceptable behaviour, it may be possible to note it and tactically ignore it in order to work on it later.

Check if the child is unwell or something is happening to contribute adversely to the situation. Work to address this.

Regarding the range of unacceptable behaviours being exhibited over the period a week or a month.
- Create a private ‘Top 10’ list of behaviours that are worthy of some attention.
- Note their frequency on a behaviour chart.
- Look for patterns in you or the child at the times of offence. Perhaps there is something worth considering changing (attitudes, timing, routines, environment) in order to manage the situation. Work out a give and take, win-win management solution as part of a process of a longer term discipline solution.
- Check for medical or other problems.
- Concentrate on one or two behaviours at a time.
- Get back to the other ‘down the list’ behaviours at another time. Keep tracking them though.
Note:
- Some behaviours become instantly become seriously unacceptable and rocket to the top of the priority list.
